Parachute Blue Winged Olive

The parachute blue-winged olive fly fishing fly imitates the adult baetis mayfly, which hatches during much of the year. Be prepared for finicky trout by carrying several types of the blue-winged olive pattern in your fly box. You never know which fly pattern the trout will accept until they tell you with a nice rise!Tied in sizes 14 to the fiddly sizes 24!

Blue Winged Olive mayflies imitations can catch trout throughout the flyfishing season. The disadvantage is that you have to carry a variety of hook sizes as one Blue Winged Olive will emerge in the morning and needs a hook size 12 BWO fly whilst another emerges at dusk and requires a hook size 20 fly. The presence of rising trout gently sipping something from the water’s surface with no duns visible on the water generally means that the trout are taking the suspended nymphs and emerging duns.

Tying The Parachute BWO:

  • Hook: Daiichi 1100 or Tiemco 100 or Equivalent in Size 14-24
  • Thread: 70 Denier Ultra Thread Olive
  • Wing/Post: Grey or Dun Poly Yarn
  • Tail: Coq de Leon or Dun Hackle Fibers
  • Hackle: Whiting Dry Fly Hackle – Saddle or Neck Hackle dyed dun
  • Abdomen and Thorax: Nature’s Spirit Fine Natural Dubbing
